Smuggler's Notch received it's name from the smuggling that sprang from the Embargo Acts of 1808. The embargo was placed on all English goods. The British shipped their goods to Canada and then through Smuggler's Notch, down the Long Trail and into New England.  The caves in the Notch could be used to store supplies and goods.
